As a frequent driver, every so many miles it’s time to take the car in for an oil change and to have everything checked out. Auto Mechanics are like car doctors, making sure the car is running up to speed the way it should, diagnosing issues, and trying to fix and heal car woes. Good mechanics are hard to find and anyone who has a good mechanic knows and trusts their judgment and expertise.
I have been a repeat customer of my mechanic for many years, so it is not uncommon when I am in the shop to strike up a conversation with the mechanics. In the past, my mechanic has told me how hard it is to break into the profession now and how a Master Mechanic is hard to find. He said that with the increasing technology in cars, it is almost impossible for many people to learn auto mechanics by tinkering and new cars require advanced education in the technology in order to fix them. As a workforce professional, I completely understood the car repair business is subject to the same pressures as any other business.
This last time I was in the shop, I was noticing a sign in the window to indicating they were hiring. I was also privy to overhearing the shop having to turn away certain jobs because they do not have the staff necessary to get the job done. I drive somewhere every day of the week and I rely on my car. If I need to have an emergency repair fixed on my car, I want to be sure there are qualified professionals available to fix the car. This labor shortage can affect so many other people trying to do their jobs.
In my years in workforce development, I have heard people mention they are interested in auto mechanics. This recent visit got me thinking the last time I have heard people say they are interested in this field, and I realized how it has been a long time since I have heard someone indicate interest. There is still a need as each vehicle on the market, new or used, has the potential to need ongoing maintenance or repair at some point.
Vehicles may change from type, brand, color, or technology. They may self-drive or fly at some point, but either way they will all need some kind of maintenance and repair at some point. A necessary field, unable to work from, and often times an unsung hero for people looking to get from point A to point B. This is working on cars, auto mechanics. #thisiswork
