New Year, new day for blogging. I wanted to try something different this year and focus on my relationship to work. I think everyone in the world has a relationship to work through themselves or others and this year, I wanted to showcase how I function in the larger world of work and my community. Let 2022 be the year of #thisiswork.
I drive to work daily in my car since public
transportation is non-existent for my area. This means I visit the gas station
a couple of times a week to put more gas in my car. Although this is not the
most exciting part of my week, the hope the price of gas going down a few cents
does get me excited. My regular gas station is on a pretty main road and has a
little store. There are couple of different workers I sometimes see if I go in
to make a purchase. Most of my visits though involve me completing my entire
transaction at the self-service pump.
If I lived in another state, I might not be pumping my own gas or the station might be larger and have other amenities. Still the world of work was around me. Sometime before my visit, a tanker truck full of gas delivered the fuel I needed to the station. While I did not go into the store on my most recent visit, other people were going in and out of the store to make purchases of snacks, lottery tickets, and items for smoking. Everything at this gas station had to be made somewhere else, delivered there, and stocked for purchase. I may not see each worker involved my gas station transaction, but there are many people involved behind the scenes.
I am not alone in my need for gasoline. Cars visit, fill up, and leave. Other people drive to and from work and all the other places they need to visit. The need for gasoline is real. There is a demand as right across the street from the gas station I visit is another one. The gas station keeps everyone getting to where they need to go. If I could not get gas, I could not get to work or all the other places I visit. When I stop to think about my role in the bigger picture, I am one small part of the chain, and the gas station is another one linking people to the world of work.
