Up until now, we have talked about having vision in your personal life or helping others find their own vision. Ultimately, it is hard to talk about vision without talking about people who you know that have vision. Those people you would call “visionaries.” In the pandemic world, with so much social unrest, looking through the clouds to see the sun can be a challenge. One way is to figure out who you know that is has vision.
It would be hard for me to talk about identifying vision without mentioning some historical figures that come to mind. For example, the United States founding fathers believed in a new type of government different from the way European countries were ruled. Thinking about people like, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, you can see vision in the birth of the country. It is hard to talk about this year, without mentioning the Black Lives Matter movement. Before our current efforts, leaders in the 1960’s, such as Martin Luther King Jr, had vision of equality. In his most famous speech, he opens with “I have a dream” Those words speak to vision. This August is the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. There were many women involved in plight. Notables such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton, had vision where woman could vote. All of the above mentioned people had vision extending far beyond their immediate future. They had vision for society.
Identifying historical figures with vision does not mean that the average person cannot have vision. A person does not need to be a preacher, politician, or motivational speaker to have vision. People with vision can be anywhere. There is a good chance you may know some people with vision leading average ordinary day to day lives. Some of the visionaries you may know may be parents or teachers trying to influence the upcoming generation of leaders. Some people may have visions surrounding a business idea or product. Some people you know may be using their vision for practical purposes in day to day life.
My challenge for everyone is to take a moment out of your #Vision2020 to identify the visionaries around you. My guess is you do not need to look far to see those working towards something better, bigger, or both. When you look at the vision around you, I hope you can find inspiration for your own life.
