I have been in workforce development for
over 10 years and I have been watching the job market, the job search methods,
and the technology surrounding it change. One of the biggest changes is the one
that we are not discussing, but happens every day- Smart Phone Job Search. Although,
I work in an environment where there are computers for job seekers to use at no
cost for job search, many turn to the mini power house in their pocket for job
seeking technology.
The cost of purchasing a smart phone has
decreased, so if a job seeker could only choose one item to purchase, why not
purchase an item that is a phone and computer at the same time. It is also
possible to enhance the usage of the phone by purchasing a keyboard that works
on Bluetooth technology to use to type on it.
As an android owner, I searched the Google
Play Store for applications. There are hundreds of job seeking applications
that can be downloaded free of charge. Some examples are: Linked In Job Search,
Indeed.com, Career Builder, and Monster.
I am sure the same is true for IPhone users.
For document management, like résumés and
cover letters, Microsoft Word can be downloaded for the phone at no charge.
Documents created can be saved in applications like Dropbox that are cloud
storage based and can be accessed from anywhere. Job seekers can stay organized with calendars,
keep lists or details in One Note or Evernote. Having an interview? Not only
can the Smart phone be used as a phone, it is possible to use Skype from the
phone. Networking? Connect with people
using LinkedIn or speak with someone using Skype. The possibilities are
endless.
So what does this mean for workforce
development professionals? As a
professional, you may use a Smart Phone for your personal use or for
communicating with other workforce development professionals, but have you
considered using these same technological innovations when working with job
seekers.
There are some ways that workforce development professionals can use smart phones for business:
·
Text
Message appointment reminders
·
Host
a live broadcast on Periscope. Job Seekers can down load the application for
free and watch you live from anywhere.
·
Instruct
classes on using smart phones for job search and etiquette for cell phones
In some areas, there may be some hesitations with this new technology. Rather than try to ignore that these technologies exist or pretend that they are not business related, organizations should encourage alternate forms of contact to keep job seekers engaged, train staff and job seekers on appropriate usage, and offer public Wi-Fi in your job seekers to use their devices while in your offices.
Technology is rapidly changing. The goal is not to leave behind the tried and true methods for serving job seekers, but rather expand our repertoire of offerings.
