Welcome to January and another time to
make some resolutions. I am tired of resolutions and trying to not only make
resolutions, but trying to keep the resolutions. The whole idea of resolutions
is negative to me and seems to imply that as humans we are just going about our
day to day and not caring how well, bad, or indifferent we are to our growth and
development. Resolutions are a way for
companies to make money off our insecurities in ourselves by selling us
products and services that we believe help us achieve what we want.
This technique is not only great for us personally, but also for our job seekers. So many people that come to use workforce development programs feel overwhelmed by their circumstances. By focusing on one small achievement each day, job seekers can increase their self-confidence and work towards bigger goals. For some the getting a job, finding a career, or overcoming barriers are goals as big as Mount Everest. The best motto is to focus on the day at hand. Achieve something small today, achieve something small tomorrow, and eventually you will achieve something bigger.
This is not to say that people will not have bad days. Some days no matter how hard a person tries, they will be bad. Those are the days to focus on the small things. Even on a bad day, there is potential for achievement.

I did not make any resolutions this year.
Instead, I am going to focus on achievement. Most people think of achievement as
something big, but it can be as small as getting up each day. An achievement can be as simple as eating a
healthier snack, reading a business article, or cleaning up a pile of papers. If we start to think of achieving something
each day, rather than pressuring ourselves to reach some huge unattainable
goal, we will not only be happier, but may actually be moving closer towards a
larger goal.
